SUMMARY:From Our Members: Field Walking in Norfolk : Neville & Carole Lee 
DESCRIPTION:Neville & Carole Lee on Field Walking in Norfolk \n\nThe Lecture given by Carole and Neville Lee is based on their experience of setting up and running a fieldwalking project in Southrepps from 2010 – 2023.\nThe report based on the project was written during the Covid years and was compiled from the records maticulously kept while PART 1 of the project was ongoing.\nAfter Covid\, our findings inspired us to fieldwalk three more fields and gave us a PART 2 to our original report.\nIn all\, thirty two fields were surveyed\, covering a total of approx.800 acres and we named the report\, “Scratching the Surface\, A Fieldwalking Project in Southrepps\,\n\nWe were living in Trunch at the time and saw an advertisement in a shop window in Southrepps\, advertising a “Summer Evening Walk” with a group from Southrepps Society. During that event we learned members had published a pictorial book on the village spanning the 19th and 20th century. We also learned of the interest aroused by the amount of pottery sherds found by villagers while walking the footpaths. When asked if we would set up a ‘fieldwalking project’ we agreed. I had just completed a degree in English  Landscape History and Archaeology at UEA and was wondering what to do next and my husband who is a Maths teacher\, enjoyed history. Did we qualify for the job? We had both experienced fieldwalking when I was at UEA but I am not sure we realised the length and breath of the deep learning curve which lay before us. That apart\, we had lots of lovely volunteers who joined us on Sunday mornings and shared the beautiful Southrepps scenery and wildlife and the added bonus of tea and biscuits and lively ‘finds’ chatter. \nThe layers of processing and identifying the finds\, map making and report writing were revealing and finally enabled us to fulfill our Mission Statement which was ‘an investigation into the evolution\, and settlement patterns within the landscape of Southrepps. SUMMARY:Harold Higgs and the Sinking of the Carnarvon Castle\, 1907 : Helen Murray
DESCRIPTION:In November 1906\, a 16-year-old from Norwich called Harold Higgs\, signed up for the adventure of a lifetime. He joined the merchant navy as an apprentice aboard the grand sailing vessel Carnarvon Castle\, tasked with carrying a general cargo to far-off Australia. What should have been a routine first voyage turned into a nightmare of fire\, shipwreck and a desperate battle to survive. \nA thousand miles from the nearest land\, disaster struck: flames engulfed the ship and forced the crew to abandon her. Harold was among the twenty-six men and boys\, who along with their Captain\, took to two open boats\, with only the provisions they could snatch before the vessel went down. Within days\, the boats became separated. For those adrift\, the ordeal had only just begun.\nFor twenty-four days\, Harold and the other men endured blistering heat\, storms\, starvation and the torment of thirst. Enormous waves smashed the boats as sharks circled hungrily beneath. The men began to lose hope as one by one they fell ill\, but amid despair\, the will to survive carried them onward. \nIn this talk\, based on the new non-fiction book\, the story captures not only the dangers of early 20th-century seafaring but also the resilience of the survivors in the face of great adversity. \nHelen Murray is a Norwich born author\, and public speaker with special interests in Victorian England\, and local history. She graduated in History at The University of East Anglia in 2001 and has over two decades of experience in the heritage sector working at times for The National Trust and Norfolk Museums Service. She is the winner of the Olga Sinclair Prize 2023 and the Past Search Prize for non-fiction in 2020 and 2021. Her first book\, Newhaven Court: Love\, Tragedy\, Heroism & Intrigue\, about a grand home in Cromer\, was published in 2022 (The History Press)\, and Fishermen\, Bathers and Beach Folk (Poppyland Publishing) in 2024. \nArrive 7:00pm for 7:30pm start.
