SUMMARY:Friday PopUp Event: Celebrating Margaret Rope - Stained Glass Artist : Arthur Rope
DESCRIPTION:Dull? Formulaic? Sentimentalised? Is that your conception of stained-glass art? How about a girl being seduced by goblins? A Tudor mass execution in progress? Vivid portraits drawn from the life? \nBurdened by limitations and prejudice\, glass art has long been neglected and scorned as beneath serious consideration by connoisseurs. Glass art is seen thanks to the light passing through it. The best artists in the medium exploit this with rich use of colour\, contrast and detailing. Margaret Rope was among such people. \nNote £5 charge to all! \n\n \nDid you Know?\nArthur Rope is interviewed on Great Railway Journeys by Michael Portillo \nThe episode of Great British Railway Journeys Series 16  \n*Also available on BBC iPlayer from 21st April*\nhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002b9qt \n\nTo help us with setting up each FROOM (From our Members) session\, please reserve your interest in attending using the following form… you can use it for each or all of the three FROOM sessions. \nRESERVE YOUR PLACE HERE

SUMMARY:Friday PopUp Event: ‘Chapelfield and beyond’ Edward Baker : Ellie Baker
DESCRIPTION:The son of a South Norfolk farmer\, Edward Barker studied at the Norwich Technical Institute in the 1930s\, later serving in the North Norfolk Observer Corps during the war. He worked as a senior graphic designer in the Display Department of Mackintosh’s chocolate factory on Chapelfield and simultaneously played a significant role in raising the profile of contemporary art in and around Norwich. \nEdward joined the newly-formed Norwich Twenty Group in 1949 and in the spirit of post-war optimism\, epitomised by the 1951 Festival of Britain\, went on to arrange exciting and controversial exhibitions of painting and sculpture\, provoking heated discussion in the correspondence columns of the Eastern Daily Press! \nEdward developed as a skilled and sensitive draughtsman and sculptor who exhibited his work both locally\, nationally and internationally. This illustrated lecture will briefly explore his early influences of the natural world before focusing on the important contribution to art Edward and his fellow artists made to this region. \nNote £5 charge to all! \nTo help us with setting up each FROOM (From our Members) session\, please reserve your interest in attending using the following form… you can use it for each or all of the three FROOM sessions. \nRESERVE YOUR PLACE HERE

SUMMARY:Harold Higgs and the Sinking of the Carnarvon Castle\, 1907 : Helen Murray
DESCRIPTION:In November 1906\, a 16-year-old from Norwich called Harold Higgs\, signed up for the adventure of a lifetime. He joined the merchant navy as an apprentice aboard the grand sailing vessel Carnarvon Castle\, tasked with carrying a general cargo to far-off Australia. What should have been a routine first voyage turned into a nightmare of fire\, shipwreck and a desperate battle to survive. \nA thousand miles from the nearest land\, disaster struck: flames engulfed the ship and forced the crew to abandon her. Harold was among the twenty-six men and boys\, who along with their Captain\, took to two open boats\, with only the provisions they could snatch before the vessel went down. Within days\, the boats became separated. For those adrift\, the ordeal had only just begun.\nFor twenty-four days\, Harold and the other men endured blistering heat\, storms\, starvation and the torment of thirst. Enormous waves smashed the boats as sharks circled hungrily beneath. The men began to lose hope as one by one they fell ill\, but amid despair\, the will to survive carried them onward. \nIn this talk\, based on the new non-fiction book\, the story captures not only the dangers of early 20th-century seafaring but also the resilience of the survivors in the face of great adversity. \nHelen Murray is a Norwich born author\, and public speaker with special interests in Victorian England\, and local history. She graduated in History at The University of East Anglia in 2001 and has over two decades of experience in the heritage sector working at times for The National Trust and Norfolk Museums Service. She is the winner of the Olga Sinclair Prize 2023 and the Past Search Prize for non-fiction in 2020 and 2021. Her first book\, Newhaven Court: Love\, Tragedy\, Heroism & Intrigue\, about a grand home in Cromer\, was published in 2022 (The History Press)\, and Fishermen\, Bathers and Beach Folk (Poppyland Publishing) in 2024. \nArrive 7:00pm for 7:30pm start.
