DESCRIPTION:Described in The History Press as ‘This is the house by Cromer town …’ \nBuilt in 1884 as the grand summer home for the well-connected Locker-Lampson family\, the red -brick\, turreted mansion Newhaven Court once sat high on a windswept hill above Cromer. Before its dramatic destruction in flames nearly eighty years later\, the house played host to such eminent figures as Sir Winston Churchill\, Alfred Lord Tennyson\, Sir Ernest Shackleton\, illustrator Kate Greenaway and French tennis superstar Suzanne Lenglen. \nIt was a home where poets rubbed shoulders with politicians and aristocracy with artists and authors. There was dance\, dining and song – but also family tragedy and hidden love. Follow the true story of Newhaven Court and its colourful inhabitants from the decadent years of the late nineteenth century and the elegant Edwardian era\, through the tragedy of the First World War and terrible conflict of the Second to the roaring twenties and the uncertain post-war age.

DESCRIPTION:Please put Saturday 30th July 2022 in your diary… \nIf you enjoy good tunes\, lively entertainment and good company\, then Chanter’s Jigge is the band for you. They cross the centuries with colourful performances of music from around Europe and beyond\, playing a unique array of traditional\, ancient and modern instruments. \nTheir musical influences and experience span many years. Performances are devised using sounds from past and present\, both played and spoken. They blend folk tunes with early and traditional music. Medieval dances rub shoulders with Victorian ballads. Lively sea shanties and traditional chorus songs are served up with foot tapping jigs and reels. They play catchy tunes\, new arrangements of old favourites and some of their own invention. Singing along in the chorus songs\, clapping and stamping in the jigs and reels are encouraged. Spontaneous dancing and leaping have been known to take place! \nPlease let Sue Sharpe know if interested.

SUMMARY:Norwich - A Black History : Paul Dickson
DESCRIPTION:Paul celebrates the diverse contribution of black people to the history of Norwich and Norfolk from street traders in the 18th and 19th centuries to Pablo Fanque\, the UK’s first black circus impresario\, the American servicemen who brought rhythm and blues and soul music to the city and Lucas\, the 1960’s US airman\, who settled in Norfolk and gave soul to the Orford Cellar. \nPaul also looks at slavery – those involved in the slave trade and the abolitionists from Norfolk like Thomas Fowell Buxton\, Amelia Opie and Harriet Martineau. We also explore the work of 19th century Norfolk boxing hero Jem Mace with black boxers and the great contributions of soldier\, historian\, archaeologist and philanthropist\, Frederick Duleep Singh and his sister Sophia Duleep Singh\, who was a leading suffragette.
