Gertrude Shanasy came to rural Norfolk as a supply teacher in 1905 and kept a journal covering her time here.
The journal highlights many social changes, how easy it was to travel round the county on the train with a bike, how easy it was to find lodgings in the villages, even how embarrassed she was at being seen in a Norwich restaurant with a young man not her brother!
Her personality comes over clearly and her comments can be acerbic, but she found romance at work and later married one of her colleagues.
